With 16.5 lakh voters, Amroha is a largely rural seat in western UP with a high concentration of Muslim voters which comprise 39% of the total electorate. 9% of population is Jat while 7% is from the Gujjar community. Kunwar Danish Ali is the sitting MP, who defeated the BJP’s Kanwar Singh Tanwar in 2019 with a margin of 63,000 votes. A former BSP leader, Danish Ali has switched to the Congress party and is contesting from Saharanpur. The BSP has fielded Mujahid Hussian, while Congress’ Ram Nath Sikarwar will contest from the SP-Congress alliance. Meanwhile, Kanwar Singh Tanwar will contest from the BJP.<br><br>Farmers’ problems are a key election issue here. The farmers call for MSP guarantee and better and timely payments from sugar mills. Numerous sugar mills have ceased operations due to rising fuel expenses and financial constraints. Complaints about corruption in the electricity department have also tainted the administration’s reputation. Farmers are also dissatisfied with the implementation of Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana which they say has not been effective in covering their losses. This seat saw substantial participation in the farmers’ protests, and is one of the six seats in Western UP that BJP lost in 2019.<br><br>The BJP government in the state is planning to construct a cricket stadium in honour of cricketer Mohammad Shami, who is a native of Amroha. CM Yogi Adityanath has also said that a master plan is being devised for Amroha’s development and diversifying sources of income in the constituency.
