India will elect the 18th Lok Sabha in the April-May election schedule. The term of the present Lok Sabha ends on June 16 and a new House has to be constituted before that. The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is gunning for a third consecutive term for Narendra Modi as Prime Minister, while the Opposition has put up the Indian National Developmental Inclusive Alliance (INDIA) to challenge him. The bloc, however, has not declared a prime ministerial candidate. In the 2019 parliamentary polls, the BJP-led National Democratic (NDA) won a total of 303 seats, leaving the Indian National Congress at 52 seats. The majority mark in the 543-seat Lok Sabha is 272 seats.
