Lalsawta is a Congress leader and the current president of the party's Mizoram state unit. Lalsawta was Mizoram's finance minister from 2008 to 2018 in the government led by chief minister Lal Thanhawla. He represented the Aizawl East-II constituency in 2008 and 2013 before losing it in 2018. He became the president of the Mizoram Pradesh Congress Committee after the retirement of former CM and Congress veteran Lal Thanhawla.
