There were a total of 3,72,684 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2024 Assembly election in Kolhapur South Assembly constituency, of which 1,87,400 were male, 1,85,233 female and 51 of the third gender. This constituency covers an approximate area of 261.46 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 16°37'46.2"N 74°14'48.5"E.

A total of five Assembly constituencies in the state of Maharashtra share borders with Kolhapur South constituency, which are: Kolhapur North, Hatkanangle, Kagal, Radhanagari, Karvir. This constituency shares an inter-state border with .

In the 2019 Maharashtra Assembly elections, Ruturaj Sanjay Patil of INC won in this constituency beating Amal Mahadik of BJP by a margin of 42,249 votes which was 17.34% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Amal Mahadik of BJP was the winner in this seat beating Patil Satej Urf Bunty D of INC by a margin of 8,528 votes which was 3.91% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Patil Satej Alias Bunty D of INC won this seat defeating Dhananjay Mahadik of IND by a margin of 5,767 votes which was 3.02% of the total votes polled for the seat.
