A total of four Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Dumka constituency, which are: Shikaripara, Nala, Sarath, Jama. This constituency shares an inter-state border with Birbhum district of West Bengal.

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Hemant Soren of JMM won in this constituency beating Lois Marandi of BJP by a margin of 13,188 votes which was 07.96% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Lois Marandi of BJP was the winner in this seat beating Hemant Soren of JMM by a margin of 4,914 votes which was 3.15% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Hemant Soren of JMM won this seat defeating Lois Marandi of BJP by a margin of 2,669 votes which was 2.35% of the total votes polled for the seat.
