There were a total of 4,23,869 registered voters on the electoral rolls for the 2024 Assembly election in Chatra Assembly constituency, of which 2,15,915 were male, 2,07,952 female and 2 of the third gender. In the 2019 Assembly elections, there were a total of 3,72,980 registered voters, of which 1,95,624 were male, 1,77,354 female and 2 from the third gender. This constituency covers an approximate area of 1853.23 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 24°18'03.6"N 84°46'54.8"E.

A total of three Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Chatra constituency, which are: Barhi, Simaria, Panki. This constituency shares an inter-state border with Gaya district of Bihar.

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Satyanand Bhokta of RJD won in this constituency beating Janardan Paswan of BJP by a margin of 24,055 votes which was 10.98% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Jay Prakash Singh Bhogta of BJP was the winner in this seat beating Satyanand Bhokta of JVM by a margin of 20,576 votes which was 11.31% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Janardan Paswan of RJD won this seat defeating Subedar Paswan of BJP by a margin of 38,555 votes which was 29.15% of the total votes polled for the seat.
