Jailed Kashmiri cleric and separatist leader Sarjan Ahmad Wagay is contesting from two seats, Ganderbal and Beerwah as an independent candidate. In Ganderbal, he will face Omar Abdullah, National Conference vice-president and former J&K CM Omar Abdullah, who represented Beerwah in the last Assembly. Wagay, known as Sarjan Barkati, a prominent face at the protests in Shopian and Kulgam after the killing of Hizbul Mujahideen commander Burhan Wani in 2016, had earlier filed his nomination from Zainpora in Shopian. However, it was rejected because the papers did not include the certificate of oath signed by the jail authorities. He was first arrested in 2016 and later in 2023 under the UAPA.
