National Conference vice-president and former chief minister Omar Abdullah is contesting from Ganderbal --- the family bastion --- and Budgam. Upset over the abrogation of Article 370, Abdullah had declared in 2020 that he would not contest assembly elections until full statehood was restored for J&K. However, he later softened his stand. After he lost the 2024 Lok Sabha polls from the Baramulla constituency to Engineer Rashid, Abdullah wanted to leave nothing to chance and decided to contest from two seats. He faces jailed cleric Sarjan Barkati in the assembly poll contest from Ganderbal seat.
