This constituency covers an approximate area of 1636.78 square kilometers and the geographic coordinates of Sabalagadh is: 24°17'30.5"N 83°33'37.4"E.

A total of two Assembly constituencies in the state of Jharkhand share borders with Bhawanathpur constituency, which are: Bishrampur, Garhwa. This constituency shares an inter-state border with Kaimur (Bhabua) and Rohtas districts of Odisha, Sonbhadra district of Uttar Pradesh, Balrampur-Ramanujganj district of Chhattisgarh.

In the 2019 Jharkhand Assembly elections, Bhanu Pratap Shahi of BJP won in this constituency beating Sogra Bibi of BSP by a margin of 39,904 votes which was 15.62% of the total votes cast. In 2014, Bhanu Pratap Shahi of NSAM was the winner in this seat beating Anant Pratap Deo of BJP by a margin of 2,661 votes which was 1.26% of the total votes polled in the constituency. In the 2009 Assembly elections, Anant Pratap Deo of INC won this seat defeating Bhanu Pratap Shahi of NSAM by a margin of 22,168 votes which was 14.06% of the total votes polled for the seat.
