Tarigami, a veteran CPI-M leader, is seeking a fifth consecutive term from the Kulgam seat in South Kashmir, once the hub of militancy in the Valley. He is also the convenor and spokesperson of the People’s Alliance for Gupkar Declaration --- a tie-up between political parties in the erstwhile state campaigning for autonomy for the region. This time, Tarigami faces a formidable opponent --- Independent Sayyar Ahmad Reshi who is reportedly supported by the banned Jamaat-e-Islami. One of Tarigami’s most notable achievements is his advocacy for labour rights which has been instrumental in pushing for better working conditions, fair wages, and comprehensive laws.
