Raina, the only candidate fielded by the Republican Party of India (Athawale) — a BJP ally, has grabbed headlines for being the first Kashmiri Pandit woman to contest polls after more than three decades of the community’s exodus from the Valley. Raina will contest from Rajpora in Pulwama district, which was once a terror hotbed in South Kashmir. The 56-year-old left her corporate job in Delhi and moved to Kashmir in 2020 to fight the sarpanch elections from Trichal. In an interview with News18, Raina had shared that her interaction with the youth of Kashmir forced her to contest the elections.
